The Irish Claddagh ring

Eve Of Samhain's release is just around the corner (5/25/10), so I thought I'd continue to entertain you with interesting factoids that relate to the book.

Today's topic is the Irish Claddagh ring.

The Irish Claddagh is traditionally given as a token of love or as an engagement ring.  It's origins lay with the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, near Galway.

The ring's design holds several meanings, and is often thought to symbolize the qualities of love.  The heart represents love, the hands, friendship, and the crown loyalty and devotion.

A woman's romantic availability is shown by how she wears the ring.  If worn on the right hand with the heart facing out, she's looking for love. If the heart's facing in, she's taken and in a relationship.

It the ring is worn on the left hand, with the heart facing out, she's engaged.  And if the heart's facing inward?  Sorry fellas, girlfriend is married, so hands off!
