New York City is getting a brand new park and it’s going to be an entire island
New York City's iconic Central Park could be getting a new rival as a must-visit green space in the Big Apple.
That's because the city is getting a brand new park, but it's not just a patch of green space; it's an entire island.
We're talking rolling hills, heaps of walking paths, and some pretty awesome river views.
Little Island will be located in the Hudson River Park, measuring 2.4 acres. It will boast over 100 species of trees and shrubs, as well as offering up some seriously picturesque views of that iconic New York City skyline.
Other highlights will include special events including arts performances and educational programmes, although at the moment exactly what will be on the itinerary hasn't been revealed.
An island is being built specifically to host the new offering, which will be free for the public to visit.
The 'island' will sit 15 feet above the Hudson River, and will have 132 concrete support structures underneath to serve as a foundation.
At the time of writing, there isn't an exact opening date for the park, but currently it's expected to open in spring 2021.
The park was created and funded by the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation in partnership with the Hudson River Park Trust.
Diller said : "It’s a joyous feeling to see Little Island rise up in the Hudson River, and now I can’t wait for New Yorkers and its visitors to cross the bridge, leave the boisterous city behind, and play, lay back and be stimulated every which way by the Island."
